There are 4 Causes of Communication Problems in Your Relationship:
#1 Cause of Communication Problems - Stonewalling
"Stonewalling" is a refusal to communicate or cooperate. This behavior occurs in situations between a romantic couple, diplomatic negotiations, politics and legal cases. Body language may indicate and reinforce this by avoiding contact and engagement with the other party. This refusal to engage shuts down any chance of productive communication.
#2 Cause of Communication Problems - Criticism
"Criticism" is a statement that attacks or puts down your partner's personality or character traits, rather than addressing the specific behavior itself.
This is VERY different from providing constructive feedback that can be heard, understood, and accepted by our Partner.
#3 Cause of Communication Problems - Defensiveness
"Defensiveness" is a tactic focused on self-protection in the form of either rationalization (reasons for why behavior in question was selected) OR minimization (denying the importance of the feedback from the other party).
#4 Cause of Communication Problems - Contempt
"Contempt" is the most destructive one of these 4 different communication problems.
This involves treating your partner with disrespect, disgust, ridicule - or otherwise "looking down" on them. It may involve mean-spirited sarcasm, mockery, eye-rolling, sneering, or name-calling.
